How To Remove a Toilet Clog When Snaking Won’t Work [Pictures]

Posted by Dave Dugdale  Published in Home and Garden

In my girls bathroom the toilet was clogged. That happens from time to time so I got out the large toilet snake I use and snaked it out. I usually only have to snake it 2 or 3 times and that usually fixes it, but this time it did not.I snaked it 10 times and the water still would not flush correctly.

So I headed down to Home Depot and got a new wax ring for the toilet because my guess was the girls had put something down the toilet that was jammed in the toilet’s “P” trap.

So to remove the toilet I did the following:

Turn off the main water line and unscrewed the water line from the toilet:

Then I removed both screw caps:

Then I removed the blots on both sides of the toilet:

I lifted off the toilet. Before that I cut the chaulk around the toilet so it would not tear the flooring when I lifted it up. I then tilted the toilet back so I got get the the P-trap underneath.

Then I went hunting for the clog (obstruction) with a screw driver and found it right away. It appears to be a very small toilet brush that must have been the previous owner’s because I have never seen it before.

Then I put on the new wax ring:

And installed everything - and it fixed the clog where the snake would not.

Took about an hour to complete the toilet repair.

How To Pressure Wash Your House For Painting [Video]

Posted by Dave Dugdale  Published in Home and Garden

We are getting our house painted, so the painting contractor came over to pressure wash the house before painting and I took video of how he did it.

Use the correct spray wand tip when cleaning your roof. The yellow 15 degree spray nozzle is what Chris from ToTheEdgePainting.com used for the sprayer. It took him about an hour to spray the whole house. Some of the high pressure spray leaked inside the house on two of the windows.

A new pressure washer can cost around $1,200 to $1,300 new. Chris got his used years ago for $400 and he has never had to do a thing to it - he said he has not even changed the oil. If you wanted to rent a pressure washer it would cost around $60 for a half day and $100 for a full day.

How To Lay Sod

Posted by Dave Dugdale  Published in Home and Garden

Last fall I had my yard torn up from a backhoe because we have a water main leak and the contractors needed install a whole new copper line from the meter to the basement wall inside.

how-to-lay-sod

  1. The sod is about 3/4 of an inch thick so bring the level of the ground to be sodded down around 3/4 of an inch.
  2. Loosen the soil with a rake
  3. Water the dirt but don’t create puddles
  4. Roll out the sod (turf)
  5. Tamp down with your foot of a tamper.
  6. Get the sod pieces as close as possible but do not overlap them
  7. Water the sod as soon as you are done, the water should penetrate the ground 4 to 6 inches deep (this is hard to do with the clay soil we have in Colorado.)
  8. Continuing watering for 10 to 12 days for the sod to take root.
  9. If you see foot prints in your sod then you know that your sod does not have enough water.
  10. Once the sod has taken root, water every 2 to 4 days.
  11. Make sure you mower has a sharp blade when mowing
  12. Mow at a minimum of 2 1/4 inches
  13. Don’t mow until the sod has taken root, cut when the grass is dry
  14. Fertilize as normal

lay-turf

I used ScientTurfic Sod from Home Depot. The sod strips are two feet by 5 feet long. Each strip cost $3.29 and weight just enough to move them around easily from the trunk of my car.

I used a steak knife to cut the sod. This worked well but it gets dull fast from the contact with the dirt, so you have to sharpen it often.
