So I am at LAX on my way back home from a conference in LA. I was walking down the concourse to my gate when for some reason a women standing next to two bags near the restroom caught my eye.

It is one of those moments that turned from boredom of listening to background airport music to excitement when the women catching my eye turns out to someone I recognize from my past. Within 20 feet away I slowed as she looks like my old girlfriend Cate from when I lived in Kansas City. Within another step or two I quickly remember that Kate moved to LA and got married. The likelihood of that being her went way up.

I slowed my pace down even more and started to approach her, “Yes, that is her” I said to myself. Now standing right in front of her I stopped and studied her face, she turns and looks at me.

I didn’t say anything for a couple of seconds while we both look at each other, I was expecting her to shout out in surprise “Dave!” but she didn’t say anything and now my confidence in that being her dropped slightly.

So I said rather slowly, “Kate?”

She said, “Yes?” Looking confused that this stranger knew her name.

So I was right! But why doesn’t she recognize me.

So then I said, “Are you Cate (lastname)? She said, “No”.

But I know she got married so that was probably true that was not her name anymore but she still didn’t know who I was.

Now I felt like a might be intruding so I said “You look exactly like someone I dated for awhile, I’m sorry to bother you”. I stood there waiting for a few more seconds just to make sure that she wasn’t kidding around with me.

I couldn’t help looking back at her several times as she waited by the men’s room. I sat down in a place where I could still see her and watched as a man she new came out of the bathroom that collected the other bag. As they walked away I could she was reenacting the encounter to him.

I kept shaking my head, am I losing my mind? Did she have a brain injury and not remember me, is she in the witness protection program – that was her, I know it!

So I called my old friend that had her cell number and I called her. I thought it would fun to follow her and then watch her pull out her phone while I called her number. But no one ever picked up.

Odd.

I added Comcast Digital Voice to my Comcast bill which they told me would be $14.95 a month for a year. I asked the sales rep twice about the promotion and he said $14.95.

I got my first bill and noticed the following:

Digital Voice was not $14.95 it was $39.95!

They added a Services Protection Plan at $.99 a month that I did even know about or ask for.

They added Starz for $19.99 that I didn’t ask for either.

So I called them and they gave me the following discounts:

Phone for $19.99 a month for 6 months.

Internet $29.99 for 12 months.

Starter cable $29.99 for 12 year.

What is up with this automatic opt-in stuff! That needs to stop.

It sucks that I have to call them and wait through all their phone prompts to tell them I DON’T WANT IT. A phone call like that can take at least 10 minutes – what a freakin’ waste of my time.

We got a new digital camera today (7/11/09), the Sony DSC-W290 ($250).

Sony DCS-W290

The one you see in the middle is the FujiFilm FinePix F10 6.3 megapixel (which Jamie recommended) got to picture 9999 and lost 100 pictures (I did recover them) we took on Ridgeway lake near Ouray CO out on the boat with the girls tubing, so we couldn’t trust it any more. We got about 3.5 years, and 10,000 photos of it.

FujiFilm FinePix F10

As you can see below the amount of use for this camera on Flickr has been declining in the past year.

The camera on the left is my first digital camera the Sony DSC-P5 3.2 megapixel which I think I paid over $475 for. I got 6,400 pictures out of this camera from 4 years of use.

Sony DSC-P5

And my first camera before that was a Olympus Stylus analog film camera. Not sure on the model # but it took great photos which I recently had scanned. I got 1,400 pictures out of this camera from 13 years of use.

Olympus Stylus

One of the things I have figured out over the years is to buy a camera with a a great battery, because once it dies and you can’t buy a replacement you have to buy another camera.

Do not check “maintain connections” (which is the default) because your sessions will die in 20 minutes and show an error for invalid session.

This is still happening in Coldfusion 8 as it did in many other versions before it with a MySQL database. Hopefully Coldfusion 9 will use the correct default for this so it does have to be done for each new site.

I like to run many SEO tests, some of those test are not just for me but for my friends to show them what is possible.

I was curious if I could out rank Tim Carter over at AskTheBuilder.com and then show my friends that it is really not that hard to make money online similar to how Tim monetizes his site with AdSense.

The reason I am “picking” on Tim Carter here is that he is an AdSense case study over at Google. In the case study Tim told everyone how much he was making when he started with AdSense, so I guess Tim has a target on his back with people trying to imitate his success.

I have emailed with Tim a little bit over the years and he seems like a great guy and has offered a lot of great ideas and info to the online community. Tim has some inside connections with Google, so I like to follow what changes Tim makes to his site because I am sure he runs many test to find out what converts best.

I had a tree die in my backyard so I cut it down and hauled it away. But the tree stump was too much for me to dig out so I hired someone to grind the stump out for me. I noticed that Tim had done a video on tree stump removal 6 months ago and ranked really well for it within 24 hours of posting it. So the idea came to me to test if I could out rank him with a similar tree stump removal video.

After about two weeks of posting my video, I now out rank him:

I will note that Tim totally kills me in both the quality of video as well as the number of video views (16,000 vs. 250) because he has such an great following.

I have nothing but great things to say about his site and the way he does his videos. I was just curious if I could out rank the AdSense Man.
