Many of the forum members on DJTV wanted to know how I created the set shown below as compared to the original one on the right. Here are my steps:
Step 1 - Get a Good Source Image From The DJTV Set
I downloaded the DJTraining-Juicer3-Overview-iPod-Lg in mp4 format and opening it up in QuickTime. Then I captured the screenshot using SnagIt (I love that program) at the original aspect ratio of 640 x 480.
Step 2 - Erase Eric Franks (Sorry Eric)
I then opened up Macromedia Fireworks (an old version MX 2004, I don’t like PhotoShop because it is too complicated).
I pasted the screen capture of the set in to a new Fireworks and then using the eraser tool I took out Eric.
I then took the png image and inserted it in to my NLE Sony Vegas and placed myself in the spot where Eric was. I was amazed that it worked really well as a concept so I then decided to rebuild the entire set.
Step 3 - Reverse Engineer the 4 Sections of the Set
There are 4 sections to the set:
- The corrugated metal texture on the left side
- The vertical blue strip above and below the monitor
- The monitor
- The glass window area with the logo
Step 4 - Replace the Corrugated Metal Texture
This is the easiest step. Using my magic wand tool in Fireworks I removed the corrugated metal texture. Actually I take that back, the magic wand tool didn’t work well here so I used the crop tool.
I then inserted the new metal and arranged the layer to back so it would fit behind the monitor. In my case I had to rotate the new metal slightly and stretch is because it was not tall enough.
Step 5 - Replace Blue Strip
This one was almost as easy as the last step. Just use the wand tool (works well here) and remove the blue strip both top and bottom and then insert a new blue gradient.
For an extra bonus I erased Eric on this step.
You can see I created the blue gradient above and in a step after that arranged it to back.
Step 6 - Replace the Window
Before I can remove the window I need to create a grid where the window is.
Now I turn off my new grid layer and then remove the glass. Also notice that I added two black boxes on top and bottom and then added my watermark logo on the bottom left in this step.
Then I created a new box where the window is and applied a ellipse gradient to reproduce the spot light effect.
Then I moved the gradient to the back so you could now see the window grid.
Step 7 - The Monitor
I added my logo, sized it to my liking and then made it very translucent.
I then “flatten Selection” for the blue gradient and the window and my logo and cropped out the center on the monitor and kept it translucent so I could show things inside of it using Vegas.
Repairing the monitor is actually the hardest part of this whole task. I had to use several gradient strips and actually use the pencil tool for some very fine detail work on the lower right corner.
Then I just take the resulting png and insert it in to Vegas and I have myself a very cool studio set.
If you are a member of digital juice and DJTV says it is OK, I will share the Fireworks png that will also work in PhotoShop.
